Francis W. Wehry

1930 - 2013 DALTON Francis W. Wehry, 83, of Sugar Hill, Dalton, formerly of Colonial Gardens, Pittsfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on July 9, 1930, a son of Joseph J. and Alice B. Hunt Wehry, he was educated in Dalton schools and grew up on the family dairy farm in Dalton where he learned the meaning of a hard day's work. He was a 1947 graduate of Dalton High School. Mr. Wehry was employed by the City of Pittsfield where he served as a firefighter with the Pittsfield Fire Department for 25 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Pittsfield Permanent Firefighters Association, and enjoyed attending fellow firefighters retirement parties with his cousin, Charles Hunt. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. His wife, the former Venera Rose Martini, whom he married Nov. 2, 1981, died Jan. 14, 2003. Mr. Wehry is survived by four sons, Francis W. Wehry, Jr., and his wife, Tara, of Denver, Colo., Andre J. Wehry of Dalton, Patrick J. Wehry and his wife, Jeanne, of West Hatfield, and Michael R. Wehry and his wife, Shelley, of Waterville, Maine; two daughters, Deborah A. Wehry of Pittsfield and Denise M. Davis of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his former wife, Laura Cyr Wehry of Richmond, Va. He was predeceased by a daughter, Marcia Wehry. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Joseph J. Wehry, Jr., John H. Wehry, and Henry T. Wehry. Fran's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and residents at Sugar Hill; Fran felt safe and comfortable residing there. He was able to reconnect with some old friends as well as make many new friends there. While at Sugar Hill, he learned a new skill of playing hand chimes, most recently performing with fellow residents after the Christmas service at Sugar Hill. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Francis William Wehry will be held Monday, Jan. 6, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church at 9 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Dery Funeral Home in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care in The Berkshires in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
