1944-2014 PITTSFIELD Maria Luisa Leal do Carmo of Pittsfield and Portugal died Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at her home in Algarve, Portugal. Maria Luisa was born in Torres Vedras, Portugal on January 27, 1944. As a youth, Luisa lived in Luanda, Angola; where her family immigrated to start a national Portuguese language newspaper. These were some of the happiest times in her life, spent with her beloved father and brother Jorge on their striking estate. After the Angolan Revolution, Luisa returned to Portugal and held important jobs at the Banco Ultramarino do Atlantico and Pao de Asucar Supermarkets in their Corporate Legal Department. She immigrated to this country in 1985, after the marriage to her husband Manuel Luis do Carmo. Shortly after, Luisa and her husband opened jewelry stores in Great Barrington and Schenectady, New York. Many will remember Luisa from her retail industry positions at J.C. Penney, Sears, Hancock Shaker Village, and Wal-Mart. In addition, Luisa attended Berkshire Community College in her mid-life. She was always excited about academic pursuits and valued her education, receiving her degree in the early 1990's. Upon retirement, she wintered with her husband most of the year on the southern coast of Portugal at Praia dos Tres Irmaoes. She leaves her step-daughter; Luisa Economou and her husband John of Lee. She also leaves her granddaughter; Katerina Eleni Economou, who she always emphasized the importance and love of education and art. Brother Judge Attorney Jorge Leal, his wife, and their two daughters. Three sisters-in-law; Delfina Paulo, Regina Suzano and Emilia Canhoto all of Chicopee, MA.
