Jack Sadoway Obituary
Jack Sadoway

LENOX Cincinnati native Jack Sadoway, 73, died Feb. 9 at home in Hospice care, three weeks after a diagnosis of lung cancer (with Alzheimer's). He leaves his wife of 45 years, Maggie Sadoway; her sister, Ruth Wheeler (Lenox); son, Solon (Haley, Orrin, Leith; Turners Falls); daughter, Sonya (Lenox); brother, Phil (Louisiana); and his best friend of 55 years, poet Philip Ramp (Aegina, Greece). After majoring in math at the University of Michigan, Jack spent a year or two each in Patuxent, Md., New York City and Portland, Ore., then met his New England wife in Greece, where they lived for 13 years. They next ran Clearwater Natural Foods in Lenox for 33 years. A self-taught artist, Jack drew insects, tigers, skulls, nudes, Byzantine churches, Guzzy and dozens of owls, often in his signature micro-stippling style. Other interests included astronomy, evolution, Indian music, "Star Trek" and "Dr. Who". For years he volunteered at the Berkshire Museum and Lenox Library - gifts may be donated to either, in his name. Jack never learned to swim or ride a bicycle but always had a screwdriver and tape measure in his Carhartt jeans. The Lenox Library is honoring him with a retrospective art show, March 4-29, including a celebration of his life Saturday, March 8, 1 to 3 p.m. At his request, his body was donated to the Albany Medical College.
