Marie D. "Mitzi" Scelsi

1931-2014 PITTSFIELD Marie D. "Mitzi" Scelsi passed away on February 12, 2014 at Hillcrest Commons after braving a long illness. Mitzi was born in Pittsfield in 1931 to John and Jeanne Eberwein. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Andrew F. Scelsi. Mitzi graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1949. After that she attended the Traphagan School of Fashion and Design in New York. She enjoyed sewing and was an excellent seamstress. Mitzi worked for the Tuberculosis and American Lung Association for a time. She was a loving and dedicated mother of three. Mitzi became a very involved volunteer and then executive director of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Berkshire County, dedicating 34 years of service to the organization. She was loved by her friends, clients and coworkers for her compassion and common sense. She retired in 1995. Mitzi continued to be a passionate volunteer and dedicated her time to various organizations such as; The National Archives, reading to the blind through the Berkshire Talking Chronicle; and working as a docent at Hancock Shaker Village. Mitzi is survived by her sons, Andrew J. Scelsi and Anthony "Tony" Scelsi, his wife, Marie Alma Scelsi, and their two sons, Jack and Chase. She is also survived by her daughter, Diane Scelsi Perez, her husband, Mike Perez, and their four children, Kiana, Victor, Talia, Leilani and great -grandson, Loia Paopao. Also survived by her sisters, Anita Manfredo, Charlotte Sutherland, Jeannine Rontowski and Lucille Eberwein; and by her brother, Robert Eberwein; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, John Eberwein. The Scelsi family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the Hillcrest Commons nurses and staff for all their compassion and loving care. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at 9 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Church with the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, C.S.S. officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to United Cerebral Palsy Association of Berkshire County or in care of the funeral home.
