Kathleen Congdon

1922 - 2014 GREAT BARRINGTON Kathleen T. Congdon, 92, died Feb. 13, 2014. She was the daughter of Richard and Anna Sweeney Tully. She was a graduate of the former Searles High School and a graduate of the St. Luke's School of Nursing. A registered nurse, she was an operating room supervisor at Fairview Hospital until being commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserves, in Norfolk, Va. Her assignments included Camp Le Jeune, N.C., USNAS Atlanta, Ga., and USNH New Orleans,La. Her specialty was neurosurgery. She served until the end of World War II, with the rank of Lieutenant, USNR. Kathleen was recalled to active duty in 1951 during the Korean War and then put on inactive reserves because of marriage in 1951. While raising her family, Kathleen was a registered nurse, night supervisor at the Health Care Center, for over 20 years. She was a charter member of the US Women's Military Memorial, located at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. Kathleen attended the inaugural dedication and subsequent events in order to establish a lasting memorial to women veterans. Kathleen was a charter member of the Harvard University Women's Health Study, and actively participated in their women's health research program for over 30 years, to the present time. She was a member of the Great Barrington American Legion Post 127, a member of the St. Luke's School of Nursing Alumni Association, a volunteer with the American Red Cross and was an active member of the Berkshire County Republican Party. Ray and Kay raised six children. Raymond H. Congdon predeceased her in 1991. Survivors include three sons, Richard R., Andrew B., and Raymond Jr.; three daughters, Kathleen Plungis, Claire Hogan, and Elizabeth Ross; sons-in-law, Charles Plungis Jr., Edward Hogan, and William Ross; daughters-in-law, Christine Congdon, Cheryl Congdon, and Laura Congdon; 11 grandchildren, Brian Congdon, Charles and Susan Plungis, Curtis and Tracee Congdon, Christine and David Hogan, Ellen and James Ross, and Jack and Maggie Congdon; a great-grandchild, Chase Congdon; two sisters, Mary Lucey and Ruth Wilcoxson; a brother, John Tully, and many dear nieces and nephews She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Tully and a sister, Ann Walsh. Kathleen was a communicant of St. Peter's Church. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Kathleen T. Congdon who died Feb. 13, will be held on Monday, Feb. 17, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Peter's Church, with the Reverend William P. Murphy, pastor officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. In keeping with Kathleen's wishes, there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy, in Kathleen's memory, may be made to the St. Peter's Church Restoration Fund in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington, MA 01230, who is in charge of arrangements.
