Stephen D. Barry

1947 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Stephen D. Barry, 66, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 25, 1947, the son of the late Thomas D. and Margaret E. Tierney Barry. He was a 1965 graduate of St. Joseph High School, and a 1970 graduate of Catholic University. A dedicated worker, he began in construction, at age 11, for his uncle, David Tierney, and had proudly served as the President of Barry Architects for 39 years. He was integral in reshaping Berkshire County by improving countless schools, town halls, fire stations, malls, homes, churches, libraries, hospitals and other civic buildings. He put his heart and soul into every project with some of his proudest accomplishments being; Pittsfield Public Schools, Berkshire Hills Country Club, Jiminy Peak Crane Base Lodge, YMCA, Boy's & Girl's Club and Curtis Shops. He enjoyed traveling, sailing, golfing, and was an avid sports fan, with his favorite teams being Boston College, the Patriots, and the world champion, Red Sox. Some of his most memorable trips included, Caribbean sailing, the Masters, and traveling to Ireland with his brothers and cousins. He was a dedicated and caring nephew to his beloved uncle, Nick Makes, both of which enjoyed summers, feeding the horses at Saratoga. He will be remembered as a selfless community leader who was generous with his time and talents, and will forever be known as a loving son, nephew, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. Stephen served as the president of the Pittsfield Music School, a member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club Holding Board, and was a strong supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Pittsfield, and the Jimmy Fund. He leaves two daughters, Shannon Stautberg and her husband, Matt, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Heather Doherty and her husband, Brian, of Norwell, Mass; three brothers, Thomas Barry of LaQuinta, Calif., Bill Barry and his wife, Marlee, John Barry and his wife, Janice, both of Pittsfield; a sister, Mary Jane Johnson and her husband, Steve, of Ashfield, Mass.; five grandchildren, Charlie, Tierney, Ginger, Teddy, and Charlotte; 12 nieces and nephews; his former wife, Marilyn Buckwalter Barry, and his faithful companion, Boston. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Stephen D. Barry, who died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, will be held Thursday, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, celebrated by Msger. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours, on Wednesday night, will be held at DERY FUNERAL HOME from 4 to 7p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jimmy Fund in care of the funeral home 54 Bradford St. 01201.
