Barbara Douglas Obituary
Barbara Foss Douglas

1922-2014 PITTSFIELD Barbara Foss Douglas, March 4, 1922 Feb. 25, 2014, passed away in her 92nd year in Pasadena, Calif. A registered nurse, she was a proud 1943 graduate of the Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Gardner, Mass. In 1944 she worked briefly at the Scripps Hospital in San Diego, Calif. where her high-school sweet heart, Wallace L. Douglas, was stationed. Both grew-up in Lunenburg, Mass. where he was a member of the 1939 class and she of the 1940 class of Lunenburg High School. They were married in June 1944 in Glendale, Calif. but took up residence on the East Coast after the war. They moved with the fortunes of the U.S. Navy and military contracts up and down the Eastern Seaboard until in 1963 they settled in Pittsfield, where they lived for 24 years raising five children. They were members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In retirement they made Brandon, Vt. and Estero, Fla. their homes for over 20 years. Known for her energy and determination, nursing provided the action and intellectual challenges toward which she strived. She kept up with medical advances and new skills and technologies working nights in the intensive care, coronary care unit of the Berkshire Medical Center from which she retired in 1984 after 20 years of service. Typical of her drive, she set a goal early on in the late forties when her husband attended MIT on the G.I. Bill that all family members earn a college degree. It was attained in 1983 when she received her B.S. in Human Services from the American International University. Those who were close to her knew and marveled at her flare for style and design, an interest and talent she was able to more fully express personally and in art classes and garden groups upon retirement. She was an active member of P.E.O Chapter H in Vermont. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Kimberly Douglas and Mark Woods of Pasadena, Calif., Jennifer Douglas of Malibu, Calif., Brenton Foss Douglas and Linda Rousseau of Amherst, N.H., Sarah and Gary Baker of Poultney, Vt.; daughter-in-law, Carole LaFlamme Douglas; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Wallace L. Douglas; her son, Jeffrey T. Douglas; her brother, Orrin John Foss Jr.; and her parents, Orrin John Foss, Doris Louise Lowe (nee Sands), and stepfather, Rodney Messenger Lowe. Memorial and internment of ashes will occur during the summer in Lunenburg, Mass. Contact the family at wldouglasfamily@gmail.com for more information.
