John J. Gillette

1922-2014 PITTSFIELD John J. Gillette, 92, a World War II Veteran, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born in Pittsfield on February 24, 1922, John graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1941 and shortly thereafter joined the General Electric Co. to begin his career. On July 14, 1942 John joined the United States Navy where, after training, he was assigned to destroyers and proudly served primarily in the Pacific theatre of operations, including Okinawa. John was honorably discharged on December 29, 1945. Upon his return to Pittsfield, he rejoined General Electric in the purchasing department. His 40 years of service to GE entailed many moves including Mississippi where he worked on the Saturn V space project; New York, and Maryland, providing his family with a wealth of experience and memories. Upon his retirement, John and his wife relocated to Palm Beach Shores, Florida. John loved to make people laugh and was well known for his sense of humor and compassion. He always had the perfect joke for any occasion, many of them original. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the North Palm Beach Country Club and, was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. Preceded in death by a son, Michael, and his sister, Dorothy, John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ginny; daughter, Mary (Grif) Highley of Clermont, Fla.; son, John J. (Felicia) Gillette, III, of Norton, Mass.; and his grandchildren, Kristen Dickinson Austin, Amanda, and Matthew Gillette, also of Norton. FUNERAL NOTICE: A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at NORTHWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 5608 Broadway, West Palm Beach, Florida. A scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass for this patriotic man will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Riviera Beach, Florida, with Rev. Fr. Peter Truong presiding. Committal services and burial, with full military honors, will follow at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to either: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 200 West 20th Street, Riviera Beach, Florida 33404 or, the West Palm Beach V.A.
