BIG RAPIDS -- Barbara Ann Pettit, 88, of Big Rapids, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at Metron of Big Rapids, where she was a resident for the past 10 years.

She was born July 14, 1930, in Big Rapids, the daughter of Ernest and Dorothy (Grzybowski) Fredrick. Barbara was a lifelong resident of Big Rapids and attended Big Rapids Schools.

On June 19, 1948, Barbara married Carl D. Pettit. Together, they raised their five children. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and preserving the fruits and vegetables from those gardens. Barbara also enjoyed sewing, volunteered for many charities and acted as a Cub Scout leader. In what little spare time she had, she loved camping and fishing with her family.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 2010.

She is survived by her son, John (Mary) Pettit; daughters, Joyce (Ben) Kinser, Sandra (Tom) Laus, Janet Bowman and Susan (Seldon) Ross; brother, Ronny (Nelda) Fredrick; sister, Lois Gross; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Maurice "Butch" Bowman; and a stillborn son.

The family would like to thank everyone at Metron of Big Rapids for the wonderful care given to Barbie. Also, a big thanks goes out to Heartland Hospice for all their support and loving care.

Private services will take place this spring at Pine Plains Cemetery, where Barbara will be laid to rest next to Carl. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Memorials in her name may be made for Heartland Hospice, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
