CHIPPEWA LAKE -- Commander Richard L. Schuberg, 70, of Chippewa Lake, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, surrounded by his wife and two sons.

He was born March 12, 1948, in Big Rapids, the son of Richard and Carolyn (Stevenson) Schuberg. Richard graduated from Barryton High School in '66, where he got his kicks on Route 66. Staying close to home, he continued his education at Ferris State University. Prior to attending Ferris State University, he spent four years enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Proud to serve his country, Richard continued his service as a Naval Officer for another 23 years. In that time, Richard met Penny, the love of his life, while stationed in Hawaii. He retired in 1993 as the Commanding Officer of Naval Construction Battalion Center, Port Hueneme, California, and eventually returned home to Big Rapids.

After returning home, Richard served the Big Rapids community as the director of the Downtown Business Association and was a part of the West Central Concert Band. After fully retiring and moving his family out to Chippewa Lake, he became known as "The Lone Trumpeter," who would serenade the inhabitants of the lake year-round from his post upon the hill with some of his favorite melodies such as "The Marines' Hymn," "Anchors Aweigh" and the Big Rapids "Fight Song." Following his departure, Chippewa Lake will have lost a little bit of what makes it special.

The greatest honor Richard passed down to his children is to live, love, laugh and to honor our great country. He loved his country, friends, family and an occasional round of golf.

Richard's love for life was infectious: aside from his trumpet, he also always carried with him a smile. He loved to say things like "what's a day without a project?," "rock and roll" and "teamwork." He will be remembered as a kindhearted man with the purest soul; he never spoke ill of others, he just lived his life to love and to serve. Richard loved all people and all animals (no animal more than his little Lola).

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Penny; sons, Richard (Megan) and Robin (Rachel); and granddaughter, Harper Schuberg. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Stephanie Simon.

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at the Chippewa Lake Community Church, with Pastor Roger Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends and family at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to American Legion Post No. 98, of Big Rapids, of which Richard was a member for over 50 years, or to Spectrum Health Hospice, which helped provide him comfort in his home during the last week of his life.
