Aubrey N. (A.N.) Standard, 87, of Big Spring passed away Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, in Big Spring. Graveside service was held Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at Trinity Memorial Park.|
A.N. was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Vicksburg, Miss., to Jewel Leverne Miller Standard and Aubrey Newton Standard Sr. He grew up in Belton and moved to Big Spring with his mother when he was 12 years old. He married Doris Parr on Feb. 3, 1953, in Lovington, N.M. He served in the United States Army and completed Military Police School before becoming an Army Air Corps Policeman. After his discharge in 1950, he joined the Big Spring Police Department as a motorcycle officer. He worked his way up to Captain before becoming a Howard County Deputy Sheriff. He was elected Howard County Sheriff in 1964 and served until his retirement in 1998. He graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., in 1975 and was offered a position with the FBI, but he made the decision to stay and serve Howard County.
A.N. is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Weeks and husband John of Big Spring, and Audrey Ware and husband Darrell of Lamesa; three grandchildren, Tatum Weeks of San Antonio, Melisa Ware-McEwen of Austin, and Meredith Ware of Big Spring; as well as three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 2007, his father A.N. Standard Sr., his mother Jewel Baggett, his stepfather Frank Baggett, and his sister Betty Jane Conway.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the ETLD Scholarship Fund, c/o Jan Foresyth at Howard College, 1001 Birdwell Lane, Big Spring, Texas, 79720.
