Ora Elizabeth Ballew Jenkins, 88, of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at the Big Spring Center for Skilled Nursing.|
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2016, at Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel with Mike Couch of First Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be at Myers and Smith Funeral Home in Big Spring on Thursday, July 7, 2016, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pallbearers are Raymond Jenkins, Ryan Hughey, Derek Hicks, Michael Jenkins, Terry Jenkins, Mack Armstrong and Gary Prater. Honorary Pallbearers are Larry Henderson and Jeff Alexander.
Ora, daughter of Gilbert and Abbie Fry Ballew, was born in Eldorado, Texas, May 9, 1928. She graduated from Eldorado High School, where she was involved in all types of sports. She then attended Draughn's Business College in Abilene. While in Abilene, she met Dudley Jenkins and they were married April 14, 1947. During their years of marriage, they lived in Abilene, San Angelo and then settled in Big Spring in 1951 to make their home. Ora was a bookkeeper by trade, working at the Ford house in Stanton for a number of years and then retiring from Gamco Industries after 17 years of service.
She was a member of the Does Auxiliary, which was part of the Elk Lodge, and held numerous positions through the years. Ora also enjoyed being Club Den Mother for her son's Boy Scout troop. After retirement, she continued to keep books and personal taxes for many years in her home. She enjoyed craft activities and spent many years doing acrylic/oil paintings which every member of family are blessed to have received.
Ora is survived by her three children, Sandra Hughey, Virginia Taylor and husband Dale, and Bill Jenkins and wife Dolores, all of Big Spring. Also known as Meme or Mema, she is survived by five grandchildren, Raymond Jenkins and Kat of Brownwood, Ryan Hughey and wife Jana of Lubbock, Derek Hicks and Bella of Frisco, Nina Armstrong and husband Mack from Seguin, and Michael Jenkins and wife Amanda of Little Elm; five great-grandchildren, Kameron Armstrong, Whittany Jenkins, Rylan and Drake Hughey, and Mason Jenkins; step-grandchildren, Amanda Blissard and daughters Myka and Aubree of Big Spring, Jessica Barrioz and husband John Raymond and daughters Josalyn and Jaicie of Midland, Casey Taylor and wife Kara and children Azelyn and Casen and Court of Monahans; one sister-in-law, Jody Miller of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Jenkins of 66 years; her parents; two brothers and two sisters; and her son-in-law, Norman Hughey in 2009.
