Raymond Dale "Rip" Arthur died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at his home in Coahoma, Texas, at the age of 92. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Myers and Smith Chapel, with burial at Coahoma Cemetery.|
Rip, who was reportedly nicknamed after the famous frog, married his Coahoma High School sweetheart, Mae Ruth Reid, in June after they graduated. They raised two wonderful sons - Danny, who became an engineer, and Lane who became a lawyer - before Ruth's death in 1983.
Shortly thereafter, he retired after 40 years with Amoco Production. He was a drilling foreman for many of his years with them and drilled wells all over Texas, New Mexico and Wyoming. He credited his high school bookkeeping course for his advancement, because he could keep logs and "work paper."
During retirement, he traveled the world for decades with Doris Smith, often taking his grandchildren with him. He loved to dance, travel, visit friends and family, tell stories, eat chili, and take groceries to everyone he loved. He loved a lot of people. And it was mutual.
He was a member of the Church of Christ. He also was very active in the Masonic Lodge and Shriners. He served as Master of the Coahoma Lodge and also served as Chaplain at San Angelo lodges.
He was born to Carrie Wesley Arthur and Laura Amanda Strong Arthur, in Desdemona, Texas in 1923.
He is preceded in death by his beloved Ruth and his son, Lane Paige Arthur, who died in 1999. He also was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.
He is survived by his son, Danny Arthur and his wife, Sherry, of Longview and their two children, Jay Arthur and Tracey Maples; and Tracey's sons, Alec, Kellen and Sean. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Nancy Arthur, of Robert Lee, Texas, widow of Lane Arthur, and their three children, Lauren Paige "Drake" Arthur and wife, Barbie, and their daughters, Rachelle and Abigail; Frank Arthur and wife, Allie, and their son Dakota; and Emily Hobbs and husband, Will, and their daughters, Sophie and Ella.
Pallbearers will be Alec Maples, Sean Maples, Kellen Maples, Lauren Arthur, Frank Arthur and Jay Arthur.
