HARRELLS — Charles Stallings Massey, of Bay Tree Lakes, passed into his heavenly home on Thursday, August 11,2016 after a valiant battle with cancer. His Christian faith and devotion to his family supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Charles was born on January 30, 1947, in Johnston County to the late Charlie Wilbur and Elsie Stallings Massey. He graduated from Smithfield High School and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In 1969, he married the love of his life, Glenda Arnetta Massey, and they made their home in Stedman, N.C., where they raised their sons and were active in Cokesbury United Methodist Church. After retiring as Chief United States Probation Officer for the Eastern District of North Carolina, he and Neta enjoyed their retirement years living at Bay Tree Lakes. Charles loved playing golf, camping, cruises, and spending time with his family and friends. He was most proud of his sons, daughters-in-law, and precious grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Glenda Araneta Massey; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Ryberg and Jennifer Stallings Massey, and Byron Philip and Lori Steppe Massey; his grandchildren, Reagan Caroline, Lawson Philip, Tanner Stallings, Linley Claire and Delaney Quinn Massey; and sister Sue Kirkpatrick. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 14 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, N.C. A visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
