Clara Holmes

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Clara Belle Cain Holmes passed away peacefully on May 19, 2018, in Hanceville, Ala.

She was born on October 26, 1923, to Ernest and Deette Cain in Elizabethtown, N.C., where she lived until her marriage to Robert Wesley Holmes in 1942. After his service in WW2 ended, they moved to Clinton, Iowa, where she spent the majority of her life. After raising their family, they retired to her childhood home in Elizabethtown. After spending many years there enjoying retired life, they moved to Birmingham, Ala. to be closer to family members and resided near Birmingham until their deaths.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Ernest Cain (Sonny), Regina Vaught, and Addison Cain; her spouse; and children Betsy Lou Holmes and Richard Earl Holmes.

She is survived by her daughter, Becky Tolan (Roger), and sons Robert III (Janet) and Thomas (Jamie). She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and several beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on July 21, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Gardendale Funeral Home in Gardendale, Ala. Graveside services and burial will be held at Old Trinity Methodist cemetery in Elizabethtown, N.C. on July 24 at 3 p.m.
