WILMINGTON — Joyce Edwards West, 82, of Wilmington passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.
Mrs. West grew up in Bladenboro and was the daughter of the late Earl L. Edwards and Stella Davis Edwards.
She graduated from Bladenboro High School in the class of 1950 and then from secretary school (Hardbarger in Raleigh) She worked at Bladenboro School until her marriage to Leon West (formerly of White Oak) on November 17, 1956. After that, she put all of her energy into being the best wife and mother she could be. We believe she greatly surpassed this goal. She later returned to the workforce and retired from LabCorp in 1994.
Joyce loved her family and also loved serving our Lord. She was a member of Oleander United Methodist Church for 43 years. She was a member of the choir and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed volunteering at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard and also provided meals for the workers with Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministries (W.A.R.M.) which her husband helped to establish. She was the most proud of this work because it was helping others. If you knew Joyce, you know she had the heart of a humble servant who preferred to work quietly in the background. We all loved her dearly and will miss her beyond words.
Mrs. West is survived by her husband of 59 years, Leon E. West; four children, David West and wife Donna, Susan Pope and husband Jeff, Cindi Warner and husband Ed and Danny West and wife Tiffany; two grandchildren, Deana Pope and Matthew West; three sisters, Mary Wiltison of Arlington, VA., Carolyn Gurkin of Whiteville, and Ruth Pifer of Germantown, MD; one brother, Donald Edwards of Oak Island.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Lenwood Edwards and Mable Gaskill.
Visitation will be Friday, June 19, at the Oleander United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall from 10 until 11 a.m. The service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. The burial will be in the West Family Cemetery on Hwy. 53 West in White Oak at 3 p.m. The Rev. Jimmie Tatum will be officiating the service.
