FAYETTEVILLE — Vance Upton Tyson Sr., 95, of Fayetteville passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
He was a prominent farmer in the Gray's Creek community. Mr. Tyson was an active member of Sherwood Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, clerk of the session, and a Sunday school teacher. He served on the board for the Gray's Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. and was a former member of the Gray's Creek Ruritan Club.
Mr. Tyson was preceded in death by his parents H.G. and Tommie Tyson and brothers Henry M. Tyson and George S. Tyson and sisters Elon Bollinger and Eula Tyson.
The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Chapel with the Rev. Archie Barringer and the Rev. Chip Grammer, officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Gray's Creek.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Tyson is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Helen Pittman Tyson of the home; son, Vance Upton Tyson Jr. and wife Rebecca of Fayetteville; daughter Patsy Tyson White and husband Thomas Ray of Fayetteville; sisters Frances Curle of Fayetteville and Joyce Slaydon and husband Sammy Ray of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
