Dorothy U. Sawyer

Dorothy Emma Uhl Sawyer, 94, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Life Care Center in Hendersonville, NC after a period of declining health. She was born on January 7, 1919 in Hardy Township, Holmes County, OH and was the daughter of the late J. Waldo Uhl and Daisy Viola McMillen Uhl.
She graduated from Millersburg High School and was valedictorian of the class of 1936. She earned a BSRN degree from the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH in 1941. She was elected to Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and to Pi Lambda Theta academic honor society. She taught nursing arts at Mansfield General Hospital in Ohio from 1941 to 1943. On March 6, 1943 she married her college sweetheart, John William Sawyer, in Tucson, AZ where he was in training with the Navy, awaiting posting. In the summer of 1943 they moved to Norfolk, VA. In 1946 they moved to Arlington, VA where they raised three daughters and welcomed John's parents into their home. She was an American Red Cross Nurse and served as a volunteer instructor in the Hospital Nurse's Aide and the Home Nursing programs from 1951 to 1977. In 1977 Dorothy and John moved to Hendersonville, NC where they met many wonderful new friends and enjoyed eighteen years together in this beautiful place. A few years after John died in 1995, she moved to the Harbor at Lake Pointe Landing in Hendersonville. She was a volunteer at the Pardee Education Center and a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Saurborn (Edward) of Hendersonville, NC, Nancy Stragand (William) of Fairfax, VA, Peggy Seagrave (Sterling) of France; two granddaughters, Laurie Saurborn Young (Dean) of Austin, TX, Melissa Saurborn (Michael Tischer) of Denver, CO; her sister-in-law, Janie Sawyer Truitt (James) of Arlington, VA; five nieces, Suzanne Uhl Powell, Hannah Truitt, Elizabeth Uhl Thurston, Claire Sawyer Liskow, and Ann Harris Truitt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John William Sawyer, and her brother and sister-in-law, Marion and Virginia Uhl.
At her request no formal services will be held. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring staff at Life Care Center and her wise and wonderful hospice team, it was a blessing to have you taking care of Mother in her last months with us.
