HENDERSONVILLE-Margaret "Penny" Pence Hoover, 94, a long time Hendersonville resident died Friday, February 21, 2014 at Carolina Village Medical Center, in Hendersonville, NC.
Mrs. Hoover was born October 17, 1919 in Swayzee, IN to the late Oscar O. Pence and Lula Covalt Pence. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Thomas E. Hoover ; two sisters; Gladys Clair and Ethel Skinner; brother Xen D. Pence; son-in-law Dr. Grant Healy.
Mrs. Hoover graduated from Purdue University
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics. She completed her internship at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY to become a Registered Dietician. Mrs. Hoover worked at Appleton Memorial Hospital in Appleton, WI, Theda Clark Memorial Hospital in Neenah, WI and at Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital in Hendersonville, NC from 1973 until her retirement in 1980.
Mrs. Hoover was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Balfour Elementary, Balfour, NC and served on the Nursing Home Advisory Committee for Henderson County, NC. An avid basketball fan, Mrs. Hoover closely followed the UNC and Purdue Teams. She enjoyed playing card games such as Bridge and Cribbage, as well as quilting, cooking and reading to her grandchildren.
Mrs. Hoover was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family will dearly miss her. She is survived by three daughters; Susan Garritan and her husband Dr. Dennis Garritan of New York, NY, Deborah Day and her husband Dr. David Day of Fairfield, CT and Nancy Healy of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren; Alison and Matthew Healy, Collin, Devin and Benjamin Day; three nieces; Linda Skinner Weaver and her husband Roger of Galveston, IN, Margaret Ann Skinner Pruder and her husband David of Honolulu, HI and Cynthia Clark Waddel of Lauderdale Lakes, FL; nephews; John Clark and wife Linda of Macy, IN and Randall Clark and wife Ann of Elkhart, IN.
The family is planning an internment at a later date in Elkhart, IN.
In lieu of flowers the family would like for donations to be made in her name to the Employee Appreciation Fund at Carolina Village, 600 Carolina Village Road, Hendersonville, NC 28792 to express their gratitude to all staff members for the excellent care given to both Mr. and Mrs. Hoover during their years at the facility.
