Robert Brooks Carter

ETOWAH-Robert Brooks Carter, 65, laid his earthly burdens aside and was welcomed home by his creator on July 24, 2014 at his home in Etowah.
Bob was a native of Durham and a son of the late Luna and Chester E. Carter. He was a 1967 graduate of Durham High School.
He was justly proud of his service in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller. His tenure, as he liked to recall, was 20 years, one month, and three days. Finding a second home in Colorado, he found his place with the Federal Aviation Administration even though he was too "old." He built everlasting friendships and met his soul mate. His service with the FAA included 17 years at the Asheville Regional Airport. He was able to keep his cool under the stress of the work. Working hard was part of his core.
Bob's love for all things aviation drew him to join the Western North Carolina Pilots Association and the Western North Carolina Air Museum, were he created many loving and lifelong friendships. Giving back, even in his passing, by requesting that donations go to the Education Foundation so others are able to pursue their love of aviation.
Bob was an avid fan of Duke basketball and football. One of his favorite souvenirs was a cap signed by Duke football coach David Cutcliffe. During basketball season he could be found rooting for his team until the very end.
Bob will always be remembered for his quick wit and his generous nature. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 16 years Cindy Carter; two daughter, whom he "adopted" and called his own, Kari Snell (Josh) of Albany, NH, and Kristi Ure (Aaron) of Thornton, CO. His legacy will live on in his four grandchildren, Logan Snell, Brodie Snell, Kaylea Ure and Landon Ure. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Carter of Fuquay-Varina; a sister, Ann Kirkland (Bill) of Durham; two nieces, Jo Carter of Portland, OR, and Elizabeth Sickles (Robert) of Davie, FL; a nephew, Kirk Kirkland (Gina) of Raleigh and great nieces and nephews, Alex, Kari and Michael Sickles, as well as Coley, Mimi and Kate Kirkland. Numerous McIntyre family members remain to cherish his memory as well.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday in the Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Hendersonville. The Reverend Danny Griffith will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the WNCPA (Western North Carolina Pilots Association) Educational Foundation, c/o Will Crook CPA, PA 33 South Main St. Waynesville, NC 28786
