ARDEN - Gerald Rickman Medd, 92, of Arden, NC passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Idelette Rickman Medd, his wife, Mary Middleton Medd, a grandson, Allen Prater, a son-in-law, James Ballinger and a grandson-in-law, John Crowe.
He attended Vanderbilt University, later gaining employment at American
Enka. He worked 25 years as a chemist, till the plant closed. During this time he took a four year leave of absents to join the US Army where he served in World War II as a special signal operator during the Okinawa Invasion.
He had a great love for rocks, history, and Indian folk lore. He had a booth at Smiley's Flea Market for 25 years where he not only sold history but told history. "He has forgotten more than most people know".
He is survived by two daughters, Janet Hooper and husband Wayne and Lisa Ballinger both of Fletcher; a son, Steven Medd and wife Theresa of Mt. Home, NC; six grandchildren, Susan, Kris, Samuel, Philip, Jacob and Dakota and three great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, February 18,
2013 at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard in Fletcher, NC with Rev. Jim Johnston officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard. A celebration of life will be held in the Calvary Fellowship Hall following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Rutherfordton County, 374 Hudlow Road, Forest City, NC 28043.
