HENDERSONVILLE-Rev. James Manchester Hindle, 89, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Carolina Village Medical Center.

Jim was born July 3, 1925 in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania to the late Howard Brooke Hindle and Marion Beach Manchester Hindle. He graduated from Upper Darby High School and Hobart College in Geneva, NY. He received his Masters in Theology from General Theological Seminary in New York City in 1952. He also spent a year studying at St. Augustine's College in Canterbury, England.
During World War II, he served in the Navy as an electrician aboard the U.S.S. Decker, an Atlantic convoy ship.
Jim spent his adult life as an Episcopalian priest, serving parishes in Mt. Holly, Tryon and Greensboro, North Carolina. His first and final parish was in Bat Cave at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. He also served as chaplain and headmaster of the Bethany School in Cincinnati and as chaplain at Christ School in Arden, SC.
Affectionately known as "Father Jim" throughout his career, he married Carol Burch in Bat Cave. They lived in Bat Cave and Hendersonville until her death in 2013.
Community service was important to Jim. In addition to mentoring young people, he served as chaplain of the Bat Cave Fire Department and VFW Post 10473. He also served on the board of Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville.
He is survived by his brother's children, Margaret Hindle Hazen of Bethesda, Maryland, and Donald Morris Hindle of Greenwich, New Jersey, as well as by the children of his two step-brothers: Robert Goldsmith, Barry Goldsmith, and Barbara Goldsmith McGuire.
Funeral Services will 2:00 PM Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
