HENDERSONVILLE--Marlene Joyce Perry, 78, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 after a serious head trauma sustained in an automobile accident on November 10th.
She and her long-time partner, Browne Hollowell, had previously lived in Asheville, NC, for over twenty years, and moved to Hendersonville in May of 2013. One reason for moving was the beginning of their dedication to MCC Sacred Journey. Marlene became a beloved member where her "can do" attitude and welcoming smile motivated and charmed those around her. This newfound spiritual family gave her much joy and peace.
She was a dedicated sponsor and volunteer of Womansong, a women's chorus in Asheville. She was a long time member of CLOSER until its closing, and volunteered for many years at Loving Food Resources.
Marlene was born on Martha's Vineyard, MA, July 14, 1935 to the late Joseph Carlo Perry and Alice Schwemmler Perry. She served in the United States Marine Corps at Quantico, VA from 1955 to 1958. She established Marlene's Taxi on the Vineyard. This became a popular business especially with the ladies, for she would go to the door and escort them down to her taxi, and would always hop out to open doors. Later she moved to Daytona Beach, FL,where she was an accountant in the firm of Mr. Allan Belus.
In 1991, Marlene and Browne met at the Women's Music and Comedy Festival in Cleveland, GA. On March 28, 1992, they pledged their commitment to one another before 54 guests in the Ormond Beach Memorial Garden in FL.
Marlene and Browne enjoyed RV travel across the US. They loved their cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, the Greek Isles and Turkey, England, Scotland and Wales, Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean. as well as Bermuda, the Azores, and parts of Spain and Portugal. They made many friends on these travels.
Marlene is survived by her partner, Browne Hollowell, nephew Joe Costa, his wife Karen and their son Drake, her "inherited" daughters Leigh and Rachel Hollowgrass, granddaughter Clara Starr Hollowgrass, John and Padi Hollowell, and Peter Hollowell. She leaves a nephew in law, Robert Mallinson, her niece Carol's daughters, Debby and Marguerite and their children; her cousins Anne Perry Coleman, Diana Perry, and Buzzy Blankenship, as well as many loving friends and cousins all over the United States.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Marlene will be held in the spring of 2014 at MCC Sacred Journey Church in Hendersonville. Date will be announced.
An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of arrangements.
