HENDERSONVILLE-Paul M. Kintner, Sr., PhD, 94, of Carolina Village in Hendersonville, died Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Carolina Village Medical Center.

Dr. Kintner graduated from the University of Kentucky in electrical engineering and was briefly employed by General Electric Company until World War II began. He joined the Army and proudly served for 4½ years. After his military service, he attended the University of Illinois, attaining an advanced degree in electrical engineering. He then joined a project at the University constructing one of the first of the modern electronic computers; he assisted in its design and was in charge of its technical operation after being delivered to the Aberdeen Proving Ground. Eventually joining the Cutler-Hammer Corporation, later a division of Eaton Corporation, Dr. Kintner spent most of his career specializing in the application of computer techniques to industrial control. He holds a number of patents in the field and wrote one of the early books on the subject.
Dr. Kintner was an avid amateur musician, playing the viola in numerous chamber groups as well as community orchestras, including the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra for over ten years. He was a member of the Unitarian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Vivian Marie Kintner of Hendersonville; two sons, Douglas Kintner of Sun Prairie, WI and Christopher Kintner of Del Mar, CA; one daughter, Victoria Griswold of Indianapolis, IN; three brothers, James Kintner, George Kintner and Robert Kintner; eight grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul M. Kintner, Jr. and three sisters, Dorothy Kintner, Margaret Anderson and Frances Boozer.
A memorial concert will be performed in Dr. Kintner's honor by the Vega String Quartet (quartet in residence at Emory University) at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Village Hall, 600 Carolina Village Rd., Hendersonville, NC. The event is free and open to the public.
