ASHEVILLE - William Joy Smith, 90, of Sunnycrest Drive, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013.

A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Ernest Joy and Celeste Sergeant Smith and was also preceded in death by a sister Joyce Smith Johnson.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Hendersonville High School and an Army Air Force veteran. After the service, he was a messenger for Railway Express for 11 years, an Esso Station Dealer for 5 years and retired as warehouse manager for Piedmont Paper Company with 27 years service. He was an inactive member of the West Asheville Masonic Lodge. He was an avid gardener, with the help of his grandson Tyler, and loved sharing his vegetables with friends and neighbors.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nina Ledbetter Smith; son, William Daniel Smith and his wife, Connie, of Asheville; grandson, William Tyler Smith of Asheville; sister, Frances Smith Carver of Mountain Home; two sisters-in-law, Sibyl Ledbetter Scroggs of Asheville and Isabelle Clark Ledbetter of Alpharetta, GA; and many nieces, nephews and pets..
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian conducted by the Rev. Kelvin Moseley. Interment will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
