Alice McKain Porter Obituary
HENDERSONVILLE-- Alice McKain Porter, 93, passed away peacefully on January 20 at Carolina Village Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Alice was born on June 17, 1920, in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late James and Alberta McKain. She graduated from Chatham College in Pittsburgh and worked in the city for four years as an elementary school teacher. After her marriage in 1947 to her husband, the late Dr. Richard A. Porter, she moved to Hendersonville where he wanted to open his practice as a small-town family physician.
In the years that followed, Alice immersed herself in her adopted community. She was a founding member of the Hendersonville YMCA and served on its Building Committee. She was the first Chairman of the Henderson County Recreation Commission and a founding member of Jackson Park. For nineteen years, she served on the Hendersonville Planning Board. Alice was a past president of both the Junior Welfare Club and the Medical & Dental Auxiliary. She has been a long-time member of the Pardee Hospital Auxiliary, most recently serving as Chairman of the Student Scholarship Committee. She was active in League of Women Voters and worked with the Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. She volunteered with the Henderson County Public Schools and United Way. Alice was a long-time, involved member and former Elder of Trinity Presbyterian Church where she was honored as Woman of the Year in 2009.
In addition to her many community pursuits, Alice was especially happy being a homemaker. Her life-long passion was her family and she was devoted to their care and well-being, always involved as an active mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Friends and family were warmly welcomed into her home and served her delicious home cooking. Alice will be remembered as a woman of great dignity and integrity. Her family always marveled at her stoicism and independence. Certainly, her selflessness and gracious nature blessed the lives of all who knew her.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Porter, in 2007, and a brother, Jim McKain. She is survived by a son, The Rev. John A. Porter (Beth) of Pittsburgh and two daughters: Ann P. Pyles (Jerry) of Hendersonville and Nancy S. Porter of Winston-Salem, NC; a sister, Janet Fawcett of Glenshaw, PA; six grandchildren: Jason Pyles (Dori) of Hendersonville, Amy Pyles Edwards (Matt) of Alpharetta, GA, Bethany Pyles Wimmer (Wade) of Greer, SC, Molly Pyles Merrill (Michael) of Pendleton, SC, and Stephen and Sarah Porter, both of Pittsburgh, PA. She was blessed to have eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a very heartfelt word of thanks to the absolutely wonderful nursing staff at Carolina Village Medical Center who took such tender and loving care of our mother during the two years she was there. Special thanks are extended to her physician and long-time family friend, Ron Moffitt, MD, as well as Joe Gernoske, Pastoral Care Minister from Trinity Presbyterian Church.
A Memorial Service in celebration of Alice's life will be held on Saturday, February 8, at 2 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church located at 900 Blythe Street here in Hendersonville. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, Alice specifically requested that memorial contributions be made to one of the following: The Memorial Garden at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 900 Blythe Street, H'ville, NC 28791; Henderson County Council on Aging, 105 King Creek Blvd, H'ville, NC 28792; United Way of Henderson County, PO Box 487, H'ville, NC 28793; or Henderson County YMCA, 810 Sixth Ave West, H'ville, NC 28739.
