Crowder, Amos Enoch, 94, passed away at his home in Fletcher on August 17 after a short struggle with pneumonia. Amos, the youngest son of Louis and Sarah Crowder, was born on April 11, 1919 in Lost Hills, CA. He grew up on Merritt Island, FL where his parents owned the Tropic Nursing Home. He attended grade school in FL and Collegedale, TN; high school at Fletcher Academy in Fletcher, NC; and numerous trade schools where he received certifications in plumbing, heating/air conditioning, electrical wiring, etc. In 1941, Amos was drafted into the US Army where he served as medic and mess sergeant during WWII under Gen. George Patton, from whom Amos received 5 Battle Stars. After the war, he worked for Belding Corticelli (recently Coates) in what is now Laurel Park, Hendersonville, setting the first 3-story machinery in the building. Amos and his family then moved to Broadview Academy in Chicago, IL where he began his maintenance career. He soon became Director of Plant Services for Florida Hospital in Orlando, FL where he worked for 15 years. After that Amos became an insurance inspector for the International Insurance Co in Washington D.C which required extensive travel around the US. In later years, Amos was maintenance engineer for Kettering Medical Center in OH, Madison Hospital in TN, and Shawnee Mission Medical Center in KS; and clerk of the works for hospitals in Greenville, TN, Brighton and Boulder, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers Henderson, Marvin and Pr Ivan Crowder; his first wife Kate (Hutchinson); and one great-grandson Trenton Roberts. He is survived by his 2nd wife Joan of Ringgold, GA; his only child Rita Kay Roberts of Fletcher; one step-son Charles Bishop of McDonald, TN; one grandson Dallas Roberts of Sandpoint, ID; one granddaughter Dr. Katy Roberts of Loma Linda, CA; 3 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
