Anne Louise West Karstedt Obituary
ASHEVILLE-Anne Louise West Karstedt, 91, of Asheville, passed away Wednesday, August 14, at Deerfield Retirement Community after an extended illness.
Anne was born in Houston, Texas to the late James Thomas West and Louise Corrine Marshall West.
She received her education from Millsaps College in Jackson Mississippi. After college, she moved to New York City and worked in advertising and then became an Airline Stewardess for Eastern Airlines and was employed with them for four years until she married Warren, who was an officer in the U.S. Army. Anne was a devoted mother and Army wife and because of her husband's military career, she lived in Lafayette, IN, Seattle, WA Jackson, MS (while her husband was in Korea), Chicago, IL, Fort Leavenworth, KS, Washington, DC, and West Point, NY. While living at West Point, Anne received her Masters of Education from State University of New York and began teaching at the elementary school there until her husband retired. When they moved to Myrtle Beach, Anne was a Special Ed Teacher working with children with disabilities. She also tutored children that needed help learning English. She loved working with children and the children were devoted to her so much that one student even made a Mother's Day card for her. Anne moved to Hendersonville in the 1983 and then later to Asheville.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Col. Warren Herbert Karstedt who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin West. Also surviving are her daughter, Margaret Marshall Karstedt Sanders (Peggy) and her husband, Joe, of Asheville and a granddaughter, Anne Michelle Tessier of Flint, Michigan and four nieces.
Anne and her husband had moved to the Deerfield Retirement Community in 2002. A family service will be held at the memorial garden at St. Giles at a later date.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center especially the skilled nursing unit that were so caring and compassionate.to her and the family.
