Barbara Ann (Green) Stricker Obituary
HENDERSONVILLE-Barbara Ann Green Stricker, 89, died Sunday, December 21, 2014 peacefully after a recent illness at the Elizabeth House. Barbara was preceded in death by her father Philip Thompson Green, Sr. and mother Elsa Frances Dette Green. She was also preceded in death by her brother Philip Thompson Green, Jr., her sister Elsa Jean Green Pearce, and Jean's husband James Pearce.
Barbara was born December 13, 1925 in Wilmette, IL. She graduated from New Trier High School in 1943 and went on to attend DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and majored in Interior Design. While attending DePauw she met the love of her life, Bill Stricker, and was engaged in May of 1944. She continued to pursue her interest in interior design at The Art Institute of Chicago for a year. They were married in July of 1946 after Bill returned home from WWII and moved to Cincinnati, OH. They resided in the suburbs of Wyoming and Hyde Park for 39 years.
Barbara was a longtime dedicated member of the Junior League for which she was a puppeteer and chairwoman of puppets on TV for grade school children in the Cincinnati area. She was an active member of the Cincinnati Garden Center and served a term as president. She remained loyal to her Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and served as president of the Alumni chapter of Cincinnati. She was an active member of the Wyoming Presbyterian Church and she served as an elder.
After moving to Hendersonville in 1982, Barbara continued to be an active volunteer and leader in the community. At First Presbyterian Church, Barbara was a devoted member, twice an elder, a bell ringer and a member of the board of Presbyterian Women. With over 22 years of service as an auxillary volunteer to Pardee Hospital, she worked at the Outpatient Surgery Desk and in the Garden Café. She also volunteered at the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, serving meals with her constant smile. Barbara was a past President of the Land O'Sky Garden Club, member of the Antique Club, member of the Hendersonville Country Club, and a past president of the Women's Golf 18 Holers.
Barbara's interests included nurturing her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren, volunteering for the community, golfing, painting with watercolors, gardening, reading, traveling, and enjoying the fellowship of friends. Barbara was a loyal friend and her biggest joy in life came from the love she gave and received from her entire family. Barbara will be deeply missed by all, and she wanted all to know that she was ready to meet the Lord after having a blessed life on earth.
Barbara is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years Clarence William "Bill" Stricker. She was a loving mother to her children William Stephen Stricker and his wife Linda of Dallas, TX; Suzanne Stricker Dew and her husband Bruce of Salem, SC; and Clarence William "Bill" Stricker, III and his wife Margaret of Hendersonville. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Mike Stricker and his wife Suzanne of Charlotte; Chris Stricker and his wife Amanda of Dallas, TX; Stacey Bodwell and her husband Jim of Dallas, TX; Laura Roth and her husband Matt of Huntington, IN; Andrew Dew and his wife Heather of San Francisco, CA; Kristi Tanner and her husband J.B. of Chapel Hill; and Meredith Stricker of Lancaster, PA. In addition Barbara is survived by twelve great-grandchildren: Jason and Sarah Kate Stricker; Jake, Skyler, Zachary, and Allie Stricker; Max Bodwell; Carley, Ben, and A.J. Roth; and Madison and Brayden Dew. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Dona Green, first cousin Debbie Buck and husband Mike, as well as eight dear nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the Hendersonville Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. William P. Campbell and Reverend Dwayne Durham officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will follow at a later date at Oakdale Cemetery in Hendersonville.
