Barton Crouse Brown died in Christ on Saturday, June 13, 2015 in Hendersonville, NC. He was born November 13, 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA and was 93.
He was a proud veteran of the US Army who served stateside during World War II and later retired from the US Army Reserves as a Major. In 1945, he married Dorothy McCaul Ballard of Lincolnton, NC, his wife of 70 years. Through her, he discovered North Carolina where he and his wife eventually made their permanent home.
He received a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master's Degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his lifetime, he worked for Shell Oil Company and Union Carbide and taught Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. Throughout his life, he maintained an avid interest in the science of Chemistry. In 1985, he retired with his wife to Hendersonville where he lived until his death.
Beyond education and work, Barton had hobbies and engaged in civic activities. From an early age, he was an avid stamp collector and a musician who played the trumpet and recorder. He was also a Boy Scout and a Boy Scout leader, a heritage he passed on to his sons and grandson.
Barton's family and friends will remember him for his strong sense of duty, his attention to detail, and the good works he did while he was among us. He was a committed Christian and a member of the Reformation Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville. Throughout his long and fruitful life, he was always active in the church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ballard Brown; his two sons, Barton McCaul Brown and his wife Vivian and Theodore Ernest Brown and his wife Jean Marie; and, his grandchildren: Dr. Judith Alice Brown, Ph.D., Amy Brown, and Barton Ian Brown.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 20th, 2015 at the Reformation Presbyterian Church on 7th Avenue West in Hendersonville. Interment at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Barton's name to the Building Fund of Reformation Presbyterian Church, 120 7th Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
