SALUDA-Bernard J. Shebest, 95, of Saluda, died Wednesday, June 19th, in a Florida nursing home. A prior resident of Miami, Florida, he living in Henderson County since 1989. He was the son of Walter and Marie Shebest and was also preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline H. Shebest and his son, Donald J. Shebest.
He was born in Williamsport, PA on March 22nd, 1918. He met and married Jacqueline when he was a Captain in the U.S. Airforce, stationed in Miami, Florida during WWII. He is survived by his three children, Nan Chong, Margaret Gergen, both of Florida, and his son, Joseph W. Shebest of Arden, N.C., grandchildren Lisa Van Smith, Luci Schweitzer, Nina Shebest and Jacqueline Shebest.
The memorial service will be announced at a later time. Bernie, as he was known, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Miami in 1956 with a BBA degree in Business. His son Joe was a legacy who graduated in 1976 also with a degree in Business, graduating eighth in his class. They always rooted together for the Hurricanes. Bernie worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Miami his entire career and was honored for his service as an executive in the Miami office. He was an avid golfer and played regularly until his 90's. One of his last rounds of golf was played with his son Joe, at Crooked Creek, where he carded a birdie on number 11.
He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he was honored for his service. He will be missed by all who knew him for his gentle caring and sense of humor.
