Bernice Richardson Thomas Obituary
CHARLOTTE-Mrs. Thomas, 91, died on May 30, 2013, at Presbyterian Hospital following complications from surgery. She was a resident of Southminster Retirement Community. Bernice was born in Pike County, Alabama, on September 29, 1921, to the late Edward Windham Richardson and Alice Barr Richardson. She was preceded in death in 1998 by her beloved husband of 58 years, the Rev. James B. Thomas Jr., and a son, James Benjamin Thomas III in 1954. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Viola Brown of Pensacola, Florida, Mildred Chandler of Grady, Alabama, and Mabel McLendon of Troy, Alabama, and by two brothers, E. H. Richardson of Banks, Alabama, and James W. Richardson of Blakeley, Georgia.
She is survived by a son, Paul Edward Thomas of Sumter, S.C., his wife Debra, and their two sons, Benjamin Wray Thomas (Heidi) and Nathan Gray Thomas. She is also survived by a daughter, Marie Thomas Hyder of Charlotte, NC, and her daughter, Katherine Hyder of San Francisco. Bernice has two surviving siblings, a brother, Brooks Richardson of Banks, Alabama and a sister, Judy Shiver of Troy, Alabama.
Following her graduation from Pike County High School in Brundidge, Alabama, Bernice attended Draughon Business College in Montgomery, Alabama, and worked at the State Capital in Montgomery. During World War II and later in the 1950s, she worked with the Dupont Corporation in three different locations: Childersburg, Alabama; Terre Haute, Indiana; and Martinsville, Virginia. She later worked as an executive assistant in the Research/Development Department of Olin Corp in Pisgah Forest, NC. She also actively supported her husband's work as a Methodist minister throughout his ministry in the Western North Carolina conference of the United Methodist Church.
A family graveside memorial service in celebration and remembrance of her life will be held in Martinsville, Virginia, at Roselawn Burial Park. Memorials can be made to Cummings Memorial United Methodist Church, 3 Banner Farm Road, Horse Shoe, NC 28742.
