Betty Jean Prestwood Jones passed peacefully at the Elizabeth house on Wednesday September 16, 2015 with her family at her side.
Betty was born in Fruitland, NC as the only daughter of Albert and Azalee Prestwood on April 22, 1928. She was preceded in death by her Husband of 53 years Ray Jones in 1998. She is survived by their four sons Steve his wife Brenda, Tim and his wife Kathy, twins David and Daniel and their wives respectively Joy and Kathy. 7 Grandchildren Joshua wife Blair, Isaac, Meredith husband Blake, Jeremy wife Sarah, and Kristie husband Jamie, Ryan, and Brittany husband Zach. 5 Great-Grand-Children Lila, Elliot, Abraham, Mills, and Azalee.
After graduating Edneyville High School in 1945 her first job was "soda jerk" at the Justice Pharmacy in Hendersonville. She married Ray Jones on Christmas Eve 1945 following his return from WWII having served in the Army Air Corps in England,. Betty was a dedicated mother at home with their 4 boys until they all began school when she then became a Library Assistant at Edneyville Elementary until she retired. She was also the self appointed birthday cake baker for teachers on their birthdays.
Both Betty and Ray were committed to their boys and to their church attending whenever the doors were opened and involved with special events of the church, GA's, VBS every year and in the kitchen. They followed their boys athletic teams attending games and serving as "taxi" for the rest of the team.
After her retirement she and Ray continued their commitment to family caring for their grandchildren when they got off the bus at their house following school and in the summers when their parents were working. Betty recently said she really considered her grandchildren "her" children.
Betty was known for her quick wit and directness which endeared her to all. She will be greatly missed.
