Birgit G "Bitten" Cook Obituary
Birgit "Bitten" Grieg Cook was born on October 1, 1930, in Bergen, Norway.
Portions of her early schooling occurred during the Nazi occupation of Norway. Her higher education took place at the Sorbonne in Paris. It was there she met her husband, Eiler Cook, a Foreign Service Officer at the American Embassy. Early on in their 65 year happy marriage, sons Kenyon and Erik were born in Coral Gables, FL and Paris.
Bitten's life was one of fulfillment, adventure and community service. She was very proud to have served her adopted country with her US Foreign Service husband. Time took them to Embassies in Belgium, France, Finland, Denmark, El Salvador, The Philippines and Spain. Community service overseas included the Well-Baby Organization in Central America and orphanage service in Manila, among other charities.Home in Hendersonville community work included Red Cross, Hospice and English as a second language. Service at St. James Episcopal Church included ushering, reception desk, Altar Guild. American Scandinavian Foundation and its education grants was also a favorite.
A skilled professional model, earlier, Bitten was a top model in Washington, DC and Copenhagen. In later years, she was a mature model in North Carolina. Tennis and skiing were her sports of choice and her dogs were always an important part of her life.
She is survived by her beloved husband Eiler, her son Kenyon Cook and wife Cindy of Charleston, SC, her son Erik Cook and wife Stephanie of Lake Forest IL, her grandchildren Spens Cook at Colorado State University and Camille Cook at Tulane University in New Orleans, her sister Else Shetelig of Oslo, Norway and her sisters-in-law, Aimee Cook of Laguna Woods, CA and Leilani Cook of Gainesville, FL.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville, NC. A reception will follow in the Trinity Room.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Memorial Garden. Checks can be mailed to St. James Episcopal Church at 766 North Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
