Blanche Elizabeth (Johnson) Nicholson Obituary
Blanche Elizabeth Johnson Nicholson
Elizabeth Johnson Nicholson, known to her family as "Tootsie", age 94, a native of Henderson County, died peacefully on May 5, 2016 at Sunrise at Webb Gin in Lawrenceville, GA. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Mitchell Glover Johnson and Lillie Mae Rusher Johnson; She was also preceded in death by her husband, George William Nicholson who died in November 1989, as well as five siblings: Carrie Estelle Johnson Stokes, Manual Glover Johnson, Van Bruce Johnson, Jack Alexander Johnson and Betty Jane Johnson Dolbee.
She and her siblings grew up during the Depression, and their father died in 1934, when "Tootsie" was only twelve years old. She was a proud" Bearcat" graduate from Hendersonville High School, and then married the love of her life, George, of Flat Rock on December 19, 1943. The young couple moved to Charlotte, in 1949, where they became very active members of the Grace Methodist Church in Charlotte. They relocated to Atlanta, Ga. in 1966.
"Tootsie" worked for a number of years at the Wesley Woods Health Center at Emory University in their Admissions Department. She and George continued to center their family around their strong Christian beliefs as members of the Decatur First United Methodist Church. Later in life she was a frequent volunteer at the Methodist Children's Home in Decatur, GA.
Mrs. Nicholson had a passion for not only her family but her many friends and often returned to Hendersonville to see them. When George became ill in 1987, she worked tirelessly caring for him until his passing. Elizabeth always put the needs of her family and others ahead of her own, and was much loved by all her family. Her last years were spent in an assisted living facility, suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Elizabeth accepted her fate with grace and courage as a devout Christian. She died peacefully from complications of that disease.
She is survived by her two sons: Robert W. Nicholson and his wife Becky, and David C. Nicholson and his wife Patricia; her four grandchildren: Christy Nicholson Rayfield and her husband Keller, Gregg Nicholson and Scott Nicholson and Jennifer Turner and her husband, Russ; three great-grandchildren: Kelsey Rayfield, Carly Rayfield and Ryan Turner, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Oakdale Cemetery with the Reverend Dr. Mark Ralls officiating.
