HENDERSONVILLE: Calvin Luther Phipps, 89, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the Four Season's Elizabeth House. He was born January 19, 1924 in Robertson Co, TN, to the late Luther Green Phipps and J. Leddie Duncan Phipps. He was also preceded in death by his wife Esther Phipps, six sisters and daughter-in-law Kathy Phipps.
Mr. Phipps lived at the Brentwood Tennessee Baptist Orphan's Home with his three sisters after his mother died when he was just 2 years old until he was 16 years old. He attended Pleasant Hill Academy and was in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1948 during WWII in the South Pacific at various land bases servicing planes including the Bah Bah Black Sheep Squadron. He graduated from Berea College in 1953 with a Major in History and a Minor in Political Science.
He met his wife Esther in 1954 in Cincinnati, Ohio at a square dance and were married on September 4, 1954 in Covington, Kentucky. He began his career as a District Executive in Danville, KY with the Boy Scouts of America. His career took him and his family to Rock Hill, SC, Elizabethtown, KY, and Miami, FL before finally coming to Hendersonville, NC in November 1974 after he was assigned and placed in charge of the Henderson and Transylvania Counties fund raising and the recruiting programs for the scouts.
After retirement "Cal" and Esther enjoyed traveling across the country with Christian tours. He enjoyed genealogy, reading history and biographies and listening to classical music. He devoured documentaries about World War II which he had in his library and had a wonderful memory for everything from statistics of baseball scores from the 1940's to intricate details of World War II. He had a wonderful sense of humor and had a kind and generous heart. He never forgot his childhood and not only did he realize the importance of human kindness to his fellow man but the importance of acceptance.
He was a member of the Rotary Club, and an active member of Fletcher United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. He volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, Pardee Hospital, the Lincoln Circle Day Care reading to the children through the Head Start program and the Blue Ridge Prison and Jail Ministry.
He is survived by his children, Lee Phipps and his wife, Lisa, of Winston Salem, Dale Phipps and his wife, Barbara, of Burlington, Lydia Gossett and her husband, Robert ,of Horse Shoe; his grandchildren, Kyle Phipps of Hendersonville, Clay Phipps of Greensboro, Jordan Gossett of Wilmington, Nehemiah Bauncy of Winston Salem, Natalie Sheppard of Winston Salem, Asia Sheppard of Asheville and Devon Bovine of Burlington as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Fletcher United Methodist Church. Reverend Dr. Stephen Ray and Reverend Ed Hillman will officiate. Interment will follow at Patty's Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.
