ELLICOTT CITY, MD. – Christine Nowlin McKay died Monday, July 27, 2015 peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 85 in Ellicott City, Maryland. Christine is survived by her son Scott McKay, grandchildren Brad McKay, Ben McKay, Adam Jorgensen, Andrew Jorgensen, Heather McKay, Connor McKay and great grandchildren Anna Sophia McKay and Robert Charles McKay. She is preceded in death by husband Robert Eastman McKay, her son Robert Nowlin McKay, her daughter Claudia (McKay) Jorgensen, her, her sister Betty Nowlin, and her parents Claud and Selma Nowlin.
Christine was born and raised in Coral Gables, Florida where she enjoyed swimming at the Venetian Pool and attended Ponce De Leon High School. She graduated from Stevens College and then Syracuse University where she obtained a Master's Degree in English in 1951. Christine married fellow Syracuse student Robert Eastman McKay, a mechanical engineer from Swampscott, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1951. After living in Bay Village, Ohio and Asheville, North Carolina for a few years the couple settled in Akron, Ohio for 24 years. In addition to raising their three children Christine also taught high school English. She was also a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Akron and enjoyed volunteering for many years at the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens. After relocating to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1983 she was a member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville and was an active patron and supporter of the Flat Rock Playhouse.
Christine loved dogs and enjoyed traveling to experience the places, people, food, and cultures. Through hard work and the support of God, family, and friends Christine enjoyed and accomplished much in life.
A private memorial service will be held in August and she will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Miami, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Flat Rock Playhouse, 2661 Greenville Hwy, Flat Rock, NC 28731. www.harrywitzkefuneralhome.com
