HENDERSONVILLE - James W. Hurd, 94, of Hendersonville, died June 8, 2013, at the Carolina Village Medical Center.
He was a native of Lynn, Massachusetts and the son of the late James H. Hurd and Mary K. Donnelly Hurd, and brother of the late Cathryn M. Blaisdell and John Richard Hurd. He was a graduate of George Washington University and the American University, Washington D.C.
He had a 27-year service in the U.S. Army which included WWII service in the North Atlantic region and the Azores. After retiring from the Army he taught briefly in the Alexandria, Va. Public Schools and then joined the administrative staff of Berry College in Rome, Ga., where he held the position of Director of Development. He retired to Hendersonville, N.C. in 1981.
He was an active hiker and a past member of the Carolina Mountain Club. He participated as a volunteer in the club's trail maintenance program. He had also volunteered at the VA hospital at Oteen, and at Interfaith Assistance Ministry as an intake worker.
He is survived by his wife Vibeke M. Nielsen Hurd of Hendersonville and daughter, Marianne Hurd Nation (Noel) of Miami Beach, Florida, three grandchildren Leah, Meredith and Todd, and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013, from the Chapel of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Interfaith Assistance Ministry, P.O. Box 2562, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793.
