Dewitt Pearce Dowdle, Jr. age 84 of Hendersonville died Monday, March 7th, 2016 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living. He was born September 4th, 1931 in Atlanta, Georgia; a son of the late Dewitt Pearce Dowdle, Sr. and Mildred Kibler Dowdle. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dowdle was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Sargent.
Mr. Dowdle proudly served his country in the United States Navy and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. He was employed for over thirty years with Wyeth Pharmaceutical Company retiring in 1990. Shortly after he and Irma married on January 21st, 1960 at Grace Episcopal Church in Asheville, the newlyweds relocated to Hendersonville in June of 1960 because it was the center of his territory. He was a member of the Elks Club, Hendersonville Country Club, and the local Hendersonville Hunting Club where he enjoyed many good times at the "Cabin". He enjoyed turkey hunting with his two special bird dogs "Fred" and "Freckles"; he loved playing cards and grouse hunting.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Irma Lee Neilson Dowdle; his four sisters-in-law, Donna Bartran of British West Indies, Paula Masters of Bat Cave; his brother-in-law, Richard Neilson of Clintwood, VA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11th, 2016 at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda conducted by the Reverend Augusta Anne Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Dewitt's memory be directed to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731; or to the Blue Ridge Humane Society, 1214 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
