Doris Lee Bates Gaskin Obituary
HENDERSONVILLE – Doris Lee Bates Gaskin, our wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015. She was 81 years young. She was born in 1934 in Johnson City, TN to William Lee Bates and Gainease Vivian Barlow Bates. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, William Lee Bates, Jr.
Doris leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 64 years, Max Gaskin of Hendersonville, NC, her daughter, Debra and her husband Alan of Virginia Beach, her son, Max Gaskin III of Covington, VA, two grandsons, Will Weaver of Lake Charles, LA, and Weston Gaskin of Richmond, VA, a granddaughter, Betsy and her husband Brian and their children, Simon and Lucy Rau of Columbus, OH, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and many special friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Jones and his team at the Pardee Wound Center, and special friends, Pam and Doug Goldsworthy.
Doris was an accomplished artist who had her art displayed for several years in the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Show. She also enjoyed sewing and working with various textiles. She created a giant, king-sized cathedral quilt that is a family heirloom and treasure. Doris was a world-class bridge player, the world's best cook and homemaker. It was her nature to find ways to help others in need. She never met a stranger.
Before retirement, Doris and Max had traveled and lived in many places with their work for Tidewater Construction Corporation in Virginia Beach,VA. Her adventurous spirit and determination was always present. After losing her right leg to diabetes and having quadruple heart-bypass surgery in 2004, she then proceeded to go skydiving in 2005 to support women's charities. She loved the excitement so much that she went skydiving again in 2006 and 2007.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity, or just be charitable to the people you love, because that is what she did. She was one-of-a-kind!
