HENDERSONVILLE-Dorothy Jean "Dee" Black, 86, longtime resident of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at the Elizabeth House Hospice care on April 27, 2015, in Hendersonville.
Dorothy was a native of West Virginia and at a young age taught disadvantaged children in the Appalachian Mountains. She and her husband of 65 years were married in Alderson, West Virginia in 1949 and lived in Charleston WV, Newport News, Virginia, Raleigh, North Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia and Novato, California before retiring to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1988.
Dorothy was a talented artist and seamstress. With her delightful personality, beauty and homemaking skills, she won the Title of Mrs. North Carolina in 1954 and represented that state in the Mrs. America Pageant as a finalist.
She is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Black; two daughters, Betsy Arnold (Jim) of Midland, Georgia and Carrie Black of Rohnert Park, California; a son, Robb Black of Hendersonville, North Carolina; 5 Grandchildren, Matthew Hopper, Daniel Hopper, Jason Decker, Brett Decker and Tara Decker; as well as her three Great Grandchildren, Austin Hopper, Justin Hopper and Jordan Decker.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother; a kind and gentle spirit adored by all who knew her.
The family held a Celebration of her life. We find comfort in knowing she is safe in the arms of our Savior and that we will see her again. She will be interred in her hometown of Alderson, West Virginia.
