Edith Eva Milburn Olds Obituary
HENDERSONVILLE--Edith Eva Milburn Olds was born in 1924, in Strakonice, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), to Milada and Rudolph Menkart. The Menkart family immigrated to New York when Eva was 15 years old. Eva subsequently became secretary to Murshida Ivy Duce in Washington, D.C, through whom she met Meher Baba. After completing her work with Murshida Duce, and while working for the Pan American Union, Eva met and married her first husband and the father of her children, James Arthur "Art" Milburn. Art and Eva raised their two children, Marsha Milburn Madigan and Scott Milburn, in Arlington, Virginia, where Eva was a homemaker, bridge player, and talented seamstress-designing and sewing all manner of items for family and home. After many years in Arlington, in 1981 Eva and Art moved to Horseshoe, where Art opened a small local real estate office after retiring from his career as a Northern Virginia real estate broker. After Art's death in 1984, Eva continued to play bridge, became the social secretary of the local single's club, and actively volunteered in Welcome Wagon, as a member of St. James Episcopal Church, and as a board member of the Blue Ridge Humane Society and the YMCA.
Eva met Jonathan Hanford Olds in 1987, and they were married on Valentine's Day in 1988. Jonathan and Eva had a very happy life together. They toured the US and Canada in their motor home, and wintered in Calusa RV Park in Key Largo, FL, where they also had many friends. Eva introduced Jonathan to downhill skiing and they enjoyed skiing out West until they were well into their 80s. They were also elegant and highly skilled ballroom dancers, and served from 2002 to 2011 as President (Jon) and Secretary (Eva) of the local Memories Dance Club, and were members of the Four Seasons Dance Club as well. Eva loved the Hendersonville Country Club and all of her friends there, including the wonderful staff. After long-term membership at St. James Episcopal, they became members of St. John in the Wilderness.Pastor Alex Viola provided very helpful support to the family in Eva's later years. After a series of small strokes beginning in 2008, Eva's health declined and her very busy life slowed down. She moved to Carolina Village in 2014, and truly appreciated the wonderful staff and facility there. Eva passed away on March 12, 2015 at Elizabeth House Hospice, and the family is grateful for the loving services of the hospice staff.
Survivors include her husband, Jonathan Olds; daughter Marsha Milburn Madigan M.D. (Bill) of Bainbridge Island, WA and their children Matthew Rohrer (Trine) and great-grandchildren Josephine Milena and Bjørn Arthur of Svendborg, Denmark; Katie Rohrer (Jill) of Sunnyvale, CA; and Kate Madigan of Washington: D.C.; son Scott Milburn of Mercer Island, WA, and grandson Riley James Milburn; brother George Menkart (Ellie) of Deland, FL, and sister-in-law Elizabeth "Diddy"Menkart of Philadelphia, PA. She was predeceased by her parents, Milada and Rudolph Menkart; brother John Menkart (Diddy), and sister Anne-Marie Gallagher (Wendell).
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Eva's memory be made to the Blue Ridge Humane Society, out of Eva's great love for companion animals, or to the Four Seasons Hospice.
