Eugene T. "Gene" O'Connor Obituary
Eugene "Gene" T. O'Connor, 89, passed away quietly on Tuesday, June 7, 2016. Gene was born in New York City in 1927. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947 in Italy and Switzerland as a Staff Sergeant, 350th Infantry, 88th Division. Even though he was a true Irishman, he was fondly called "Geno" by many who knew and loved him. A resident of Hendersonville since 1991, Gene and his late wife, Margaret "Marge", were longtime residents of The Oaks.
Gene and Marge married in 1952, the same year he joined the NYPD. He worked many beats as a New York City police officer, including a stint in Manhattan's famous "Hell's Kitchen." Gene was inducted into The Honor Legion NYPD for acts performed in the line of duty. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, having spent many years as a member of Lodge 878 in NY and Lodge 1616 in Hendersonville.
Gene was a lifelong athlete. As a young man, he played basketball for Long Island City High School in Queens, NY, and was an avid handball player and runner. In later years, he was a regular at a Laurel Park gym and enjoyed après treadmill coffee with his wide circle of friends. Gene was a generous soul, donating his time to the community, quick to give small gifts and spread holiday cheer.
Gene is survived by his son, Tom O'Connor, and his daughter, Jeanne O'Connor. He was a beloved uncle to Margie Wronker, Jim Marron and Maureen Mirand and brother-in-law to Eleanor Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016, in Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel, 125 S. Church St. in Hendersonville.
