Gerald Emil Martin Obituary
HENDERSONVILLE--Gerald E. Martin (Jerry), of Hendersonville, NC, passed away on February 17, 2015 at the age of 89. His beloved wife, Joan, pre-deceased Jerry in September 2014, and upon losing her, his only wish was to join her. Thankfully he is now at peace.
Jerry was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and served in WWII on the frigates USS Orlando and USS Van Buren as a meteorologist. He attended Franklin College (IN) on the G.I. bill where he met Joan. Upon graduation he joined the General Electric Co., spending four years in Hendersonville during the 1960's. He ended his career with Xerox in Rochester, NY, where he and Joan retired. They moved to Hendersonville in 1995 and spent 20 glorious years there enjoying very full lives.
Jerry was endlessly curious, and was an avid reader of diverse topics including cosmology, aeronautics, and the stock market. He was quite competitive and loved playing bridge, Texas Hold'em, and golf at 'The Club'. He loved his home and property, and continued riding the lawn mower over his scenic land well into his last year.
Jerry is survived by his daughters Nancy Edmonds (John) of Houston, TX, and Cynthia Martin (Selisse Berry) of Berkeley, CA; grandson Kirk Edmonds of Tampa, FL; brothers Frank, Kenton, Peter, and Tim; and was pre-deceased by his sister, Kay.
A special thank you to all the wonderfully kind and capable people at Four Seasons Hospice, Compassionate Home Care, and Bayada Home Health.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at a date to be determined in June. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC, 28731. The family is also pleased to announce the Joan R. Martin Scholarship Fund that Jerry helped to establish - donations may be designated to the fund at: P.E.O. Foundation, Joan R. Martin Scholarship Fund, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.
