Hendrik Jan "Henk" Kiefte Obituary
FLAT ROCK, NC-- Hendrik Jan "Henk" Kiefte passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016, was born in Dordrecht, The Netherlands on December 8, 1953. In 1956, he emigrated with his parents and four sisters to the USA. They lived first in Hawthorne, NJ and later in Ridgewood, NJ. Henk served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany. Henk married Denise Fox of Ridgewood in 1974. They were later divorced. Much of Henk's adult life was spent in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. While paddling the region's many rivers, Henk's work was inspired by nature and the driftwood he collected for his art pieces. The wood itself told him, in a creative sense, what it was to become. His work brought Henk and those who employed him joy and appreciation. Throughout his lifetime, Henk fostered enduring loyalties with his family and numerous friends. His memory will be cherished by all who shared his journey.
Henk was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Anne Padalino and Jeltje Yskamp, and a nephew, Heath Larson. He is survived by his sisters, Jan B. Larson and husband Don of Okoboji, IA and Miriam Lanahan and husband Dennis of Tryon, NC; and nephews and nieces Marc Yskamp, Teri Padalino, Jake Padalino, Jodie Phillips Morrison, Michael Phillips, Justin Larson, Nathan Larson, Ryan Intres, and Courtney Intres.
A celebration of Henk's life will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2016 by a time of sharing and remembrance at the fishing access at the lower Green River at 2254 Coxe Road, Rutherfordton, NC at 3:00 PM. A potluck picnic following the time of remembrance will be held at 731 Phillips Dairy Road, Tryon, NC at 5:00 PM. Please call or text Miriam at 828-442-7447 for more information.
