HENDERSONVILLE-Ingrid C. Johnson, 92, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Elizabeth House.
She was born September 3, 1922 in Battle Creek, MI to the late Herman J. Johnson, Sr. and Elizabeth Swensen Johnson. Ingrid was also preceded in death by her sister Mary Johnson Clark and her husband Warren and brother Herman J. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Wilma.
Ingrid graduated from Battle Creek High School in Battle Creek, MI in 1940. After earning a BA from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI in 1944; she stayed to teach Health and Physical Education till 1948. Ingrid became Dean of Women at Southern Adventist University College, TN in 1949-1950. She then became Dean of Nurses at Glendale School of Nursing from 1951-1952, then moved to Florida Hospital School of Nursing from 1952-1954.
From Vanderbilt University in Nashville she obtained a MA and moved to Pacific Union College, Angwin, CA as associate professor of Health and Education in 1955-1959. She then returned to Andrews University as Associate Professor of Physical Education until she retired in 1985 and was awarded Professor Emeritus in 1985.
She had such a passion for teaching and touched many lives in her career. Ingrid's dedication and relentless efforts to invest in the youth of our country was admirable and will be greatly missed. She remained in contact throughout the years with many of her former students which brought her such great joy to see the lives and careers flourish well.
Ingrid believed very strongly in the importance of health and physical education starting at the elementary school level and over the years directed workshops for elementary PE teachers in several states. She also edited a book for elementary schools "Happiness is Physical Education in the Elementary School" as a guide on curriculum and lessons for physical education at the elementary school level.
In 2000, Ingrid moved to Hendersonville, NC to be near her two brothers Herman Jr. and Bob.
She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in many tournaments with her two brothers and got her first and only hole in one in 1993 at the age of 70.
Ingrid is survived by her brother Bob Johnson and his wife Nilda of Hendersonville as well as nieces and nephew; Richard Johnson and Family of FL, Terri Johnson Coryell and Family of CA, Cheryl Johnson and Family of Hendersonville, Steve Clark and Family of CO, Lori Johnson Cadiente and Family and Mike Johnson and Family all of FL and Angela Johnson Jensen and Family of Denmark.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 P.M on Saturday April 25th, 2015 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
