Iris Ann Stewart

Obituary Condolences

ATLANTA, GA--Iris Ann Stewart, 88, of Atlanta, GA, died Nov. 17. Born in Greensboro, she was the daughter of Virginia Pearl and Joe Oliver Peterson of Laurel Park. Known for her kindness and sweet disposition, Iris Ann embodied the charm, elegance and grace of a Southern woman.
Raised in Laurel Park, she was a graduate of Hendersonville High School and received a bachelor's degree in English from The Woman's College of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1948. She taught high school in Mills River for several years before starting her family. She and her husband of 55 years, Henry Marriotte Stewart, also of Hendersonville, raised three children. As the "glue of the family," Iris Ann was a devoted mother, wife, and homemaker.
She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and had a devout love of Scripture. A resident of Atlanta since 1971, she enjoyed attending the Atlanta Symphony and playing Bridge, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan who was in attendance the night Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's homerun record.
She is survived by daughter Virginia Stewart Houk of Chapel Hill; son Jimmy (Debbie) of Orlando FL; son Tommy (Mary) of Roswell GA; and grandchildren Will of Athens GA, Claire of Roswell GA, and Will Shirley of Roswell GA.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in Dunwoody GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mount Vernon Road, Dunwoody GA 30338, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Georgia Funeral Care, Acworth GA.
