James Allen Roberts MD Obituary
James Allen Roberts, M.D., went to be with the Lord on November 12, 2016 after a prolonged illness. He was with family and passed peacefully at his home in Hendersonville, NC. He was 82 years old.
Jim was born in Beach, North Dakota to Earl and Maria Roberts, and enjoyed the love and friendship of his brothers Darrel and Duane, who preceded him in death. As a young boy in Billings, Montana, Jim established an early habit as a hard worker, setting up independent dealerships in earthworms, car-washing brush sales, and working as janitor. He attended Eastern Montana College of Education and then transferred to the University of Chicago, where he completed his undergraduate, medical, and medical residency training. Following training, Jim proudly served for two years as a Navy Physician in San Diego, California.
During medical school Jim married past wife Joan and raised three children in Covington, Louisiana, a small town north of New Orleans. There he enjoyed gardening, bridge, gathering with work friends, life in the church, and long vacations to the mountains with his family. Jim was always an avid reader, loved photography, and truly enjoyed museums and the theater.
As a physician, Jim specialized in Urology and developed a thriving clinical practice while also gaining prominence as a teacher and researcher. As a faculty member at Tulane University for over 30 years, he ran a productive research program and published more than 150 papers in professional journals and authored over 30 book chapters. He also developed novel medical instruments and trained over 100 medical residents. He was a member of many professional societies and a proud "Friend of Bill". He left a lasting and significant legacy as a researcher and teacher, and touched the lives of many patients as a beloved small-town physician. He is remembered at Tulane by the James A. Roberts Visiting Professorship in Urology.
Jim is remembered as a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, who shared generously both his wit and his wisdom. He loved bringing the gift of laughter to those around him, and employed his sometimes, mischievous sense of humor for the benefit of friends, family, and even strangers. After moving to Hendersonville in 1999, he developed deep ties to the community through his fellowship in the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, his neighborhood friends, and volunteer work at Crosswalk Youth Center. He cherished lively conversations with his "lunch gang", who gathered weekly to ponder and solve the world's problems (stay tuned: they're getting close but not quite there yet).
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Hilda and children (and spouses) Mary and Tom (Debbie), and step-children Linda (George), Danny (Jennifer), Jon (Tonja), and Michael (Jennifer). He was preceded in death by his daughter Jenny. He was adored "Grandpa", "Teepa" and "Grampy with the White Beard" to grandchildren Jason, Kellie, Sarah, Christopher, Oliver, William, Evan, Lassiter, Elizabeth, Lily Kate, Logan, Jordan, Courtney and Mary Frances.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 til 2:00 pm prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to 1) Hospice Four Seasons Compassion for Life: Four Seasons Foundation Office; 571 South Allen Road; Flat Rock, NC 28731 (https://www.fourseasonscfl.org/donate/foundation/) or 2) Crosswalk Youth Center of First Baptist; 312 5th Ave W, Hendersonville, NC 28239; or 3) James A Roberts Visiting Professorship; Tulane University Department of Urology (http://www2.tulane.edu/som/departments/urology/index.cfm - then "give to Urology" link).
