HENDERSONVILLE-Joseph Vincent Piland, 90, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the Elizabeth House.
Mr. Piland was born December 8, 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Frank Edward Piland and Mary Ellen Owens Piland. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, James Edward Piland and a sister Frances Chamberlin.
Joe received Certification of Apprenticeship as a machinist in the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. He received an Associate in Arts degree from the College of William and Mary and was a graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in mechanical engineering. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a navigator in the US Air Force in the Pacific area. Following his service, he married Ruth Elizabeth Beard in 1947.
He worked for the NACA in Langley Field, Virginia and NASA in Houston, Texas, retiring as Director of Facilities. Joe was of the Roman Catholic faith.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth, a daughter, Ellen Westerheid and her husband, James of McKinney, Texas; a son John Steven Piland and his wife Kim, of Chicago, IL; and a son Joseph Piland, Jr. of Valley View, Texas; a brother, Robert Piland of The Woodlands, Texas; grandchildren, Adam Westerheid, of McKinney, Texas, Sarah Henry and husband Landon, of San Angelo, Texas, Laura Piland of Ft. Worth, Texas, Scott Piland and wife Kelly of Dallas, Texas; Travis Piland of Plano, Texas, Nicole Springer and her husband Paul of Lubbock, Texas and Joseph Piland, III of Dallas, Texas. Other survivors include eight great-grandchildren, Joseph, Lylah, Grayson and Ellie Henry; Kaydance Westerheid; Wynne Piland; Katarina and Travis Springer.
A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, September 5, 2014 in the Village Hall at Carolina Village.
Memorials may be made to the Independent Living Support, 600 Carolina Village Road, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
