Obituary Condolences

BREVARD-- Malcolm F. Johnson of Brevard died on Friday, October 17, 2014, just three days before his 95th birthday.
He was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa, the son of the late Peter and Alice Carlson Johnson. He was a graduate of Missouri Valley High School and of Brevard College, and also attended the Van Sant School of business in Omaha, Nebraska.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Washington, DC, Chapel Hill, NC, and in New Caledonia. He was a member of the US Navy Reserves for 28 years.
In December 1942 he was married to the former Barbara Beebee. They moved to Brevard, NC in 1948. He was co-owner of The Sportsman, a men's clothing store in Brevard for several years. He was employed by Ecusta Paper Corporation, later known as Olin Corporation, for 30 years, retiring in 1984 as Manager, Credit and Banking, for the Ecusta Paper and Film Group.
In the early 1960's he was a moving force in the organization of youth baseball and football in the Brevard area. He and other young fathers built the first ball fields near the Ecusta property at Pisgah Forest. He retained an interest in all sports throughout his life. He was an avid bowler, and served as President of the Ecusta Men's Bowling Leagues for a number of years. He was chosen as a Life Member of the Western North Carolina Men's Bowling Association in 1973 and was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1980. During his years of membership in the WNCMBA, he started the program which awards scholarships to deserving sons and daughters of bowlers for study in colleges or trade schools. A feature of this program is that the recipients do not have to be honor students; they must have passing grades in high school and be certified by their teachers as being able to benefit from post-high school study. Mr. Johnson was an active member of the Blue Devil Club in Brevard and served a term as President. He also started the scholarship program for this organization.
In 1993, Mr. Johnson was elected Councilman for the City of Brevard, and served two four-year terms. He was also on the Board of Western Carolina Community Action.
He leaves his wife of 71 years, Barbara Johnson; two sons, Malcolm Blair Johnson of Huntsville, AL, and Warren Arthur Johnson and wife Linda of Etowah, NC; and two grandsons, Malcolm Arthur Johnson and Brandon David Johnson, both of Huntsville, AL.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Brevard with Rev. Mike Holder officiating. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Transylvania Youth Association, Inc. c/o Transylvania County Recreation Department, 1078 Ecusta Road, Brevard, NC 28712.
